Types of Work
Types of work are used to group or classify different types of work orders for planning, analysis and reporting purposes and influences the grouping of tasks on tactical work orders.
Types of work can also determine a work order's initial status. When the type of work specified for the work order has an associated work order status, then the work order's status is set to the work order status for the type of work.
Examples of Types of Work
Preventive Maintenance
Preventive maintenance consists of any maintenance tactic that would prevent a breakdown.
Breakdown
A specific type of failure, where an item of plant or equipment is completely unable to function. Breakdown work is a production-related activity that is urgent and required to recover full operational productivity after an unplanned loss of function. These failures have not yet been assessed and converted to tactical maintenance activities through a reliability based methodology. Breakdown work is also known as corrective maintenance.
Ad Hoc
Ad hoc work is a non-production related activity that is identified through unplanned observation and cannot be categorised as any of the other non-tactical types of work. Ad hoc is also known as general maintenance. For example housekeeping, cleaning, and general building and yard maintenance.
Condition Monitoring
Condition monitoring is the use of specialist equipment to measure the condition of equipment. Vibration analysis, tribology and thermography are some examples of condition monitoring techniques. Condition monitoring work is implemented through condition-based maintenance tactics, normally in the form of inspecting or testing certain characteristics.
Project and Modification
Project and modification work is one or more tasks that are used to implement a design improvement maintenance tactic on an asset – normally in the form of an addition, removal or change to an asset or part thereof – to improve reliability or throughput.
It's advisable to use the project and modification type of work as a combined type of work by low maturity clients. Once the business unit's asset management practices mature, it is suggested to split the type of work into two types:
- Project
- Modification
