Sites
Sites facilitate the distribution of an organisation's assets and other items at different locations.
Sites can be viewed in a tree structure or on a grid, by switching between "Tree" and "Grid" in the drop-down on the toolbar.
Site tree
The site tree allows you to define a hierarchy of sites. You can add parent sites and child sites to the tree structure, as well as expand and collapse parent records to view child records.
Virtual and non-virtual sites
A site is either virtual or non-virtual.
- Virtual sites
- Non-virtual sites
Virtual sites are not actual; they do not physically exist. Items that occur at a number of different locations can be associated with a virtual site. A virtual site is associated with a collection of items that occur at a number of non-virtual sites. All items associated with a virtual site use the same standards, asset types, resources, reports, roles and responsibilities.
Configure virtual sites for different divisions, so that items that are common to each of the different processes are configured once. In the site tree, a virtual site is identified by a folder icon.
Certain items are associated with a physical, actual site. Items associated with a non-virtual site only occur at that site. For example, items associated with the "Epping Jam Factory" site only occur at that site; they do not occur at any other site.
Configure non-virtual sites for items that only occur at that site and not at any other site. In the site tree, a non-virtual site is identified by a globe icon.
The terms "virtual" and "non-virtual" are used as a classification mechanism for sites. So, you can classify a site as virtual, for instance, when its not a representation of a physical site. However, the items that fall under the site are shared across all physical sites.
The classification of virtual and non-virtual sites is purely used for configuration purposes. Its the permissions that determine what a user can and cannot see. These permissions are set up in the permission tree, which is a mirror of the site tree.
Refer to Permission Trees for more information.
Business Rules
- A virtual site may not be inserted below a non-virtual site.
- A virtual site cannot be changed to a non-virtual site and vice versa.
